ADDITIONAL PRODUCT INFORMATION

Construction of Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium started in 1964 as part of a campaign promise by Mayor Ivan Allen Jr. who wanted to attract a Major League Baseball team to Atlanta. When the Stadium opened in 1965 many Atlanta-based groups started working towards bringing a pro football team to the city. On June 30, 1965, the NFL Commissioner, Pete Rozelle, granted Rankin Smith Sr, an Executive VP at Life Insurance of Georgia, ownership of the Atlanta Falcons franchise. The following year, the Falcons (and the Braves) played their inaugural season at Atlanta-Fulton. In the 1978-79 season, the Falcons qualified for the playoffs for the first time and Atlanta-Fulton hosted a Wild Card game in which the Falcons defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, 14-13. In 1992 the Falcons moved to the Georgia Dome and five years later Atlanta-Fulton was demolished. The site is now Turner Field's parking lot and contains an outline of the old stadium.
