About The SPORT Gallery

Our Story

The SPORT Gallery draws its inspiration from the pioneering SPORT magazine, launched in 1946 to celebrate what its editors accurately anticipated would be the coming explosion of interest in the games people play in post-war North America.

Conceived by a trio of erstwhile Canadian sports writers with the acquisition of SPORT archives following the shuttering of the magazine in 2000, the gallery celebrates the rich history and artistry of sport.

Our gallery in Toronto's Distillery District brings SPORT magazine to life with walls lined with the magazine's historic covers and our fine at prints made from the exquisite original photography that was featured in the magazine. We also feature an extensive range of vintage-inspired sports apparel, headwear, and gifts inspired by SPORT magazine—featuring the classic style that appeared in SPORT, and the teams that SPORT covered so frequently. The Brooklyn Dodgers and Jackie Robinson were a significant part of SPORT, with Robinson breaking the MLB colour-barrier in 1947, it was SPORT that told the story, and today we represent that story in our gallery.

The SPORT Gallery first opened in 2006 in Toronto's Distillery Historic District. Our first gallery was dedicated entirely to our fine art prints and select paintings from renowned sports artists. In 2009, The SPORT Gallery expanded to offer a selection of vintage-inspired apparel. In 2016, we expanded our flagship Toronto gallery, moving to a 2500-square-foot space in the Distillery District.

Today our flagship gallery features a high-end coffee offering, ARENA Coffee Bar, developed in partnership with Toronto's Pilot Coffee Roasters, and serving as a comfortable space to watch a game, sport documentary, and enjoy a great cup of coffee or specialty beer from Toronto's Left Field Brewery. Our Toronto gallery also doubles as an event space, with large fully automatic pull-out bleacher seating. We frequently feature SPORTTalks, SPORT Trivia nights, and games on the big screen.

The SPORT Gallery is the exclusive representative of the SPORT Magazine Photographic Archive and has access to thousands of pieces of exceptional, iconic sports photography, the majority of which are unique, a large number of which were originally published in SPORT magazine, and many of which have never before been seen by the general public.

An exclusive selection of prints is available in limited edition series, while many more are offered in open editions. The prints are unlike anything available in the sports memorabilia and wider photographic markets today. Drawn principally from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, the images were selected for their artistic qualities as well as their uniqueness and historical significance.

Not only unique in their vibrancy, quality and subject matter, every fine art print in the SPORT Gallery has been created by the internationally acclaimed Giclée printing process using only the highest quality acid-free papers and inks. This attention to detail has resulted in true artwork that is of far superior quality and durability than what is available in the sports memorabilia and collectible marketplace.

Giclée printing is the new darling of the art world. It is coveted by collectors for its longevity and quality, and desired by galleries and artists alike because it intimately insets artisans into the creative process.

Giclée refers to a process of creating hand-crafted, fine-art prints from a digital source using fade-resistant archival inks. Each individually crafted print is a high-resolution, high-fidelity, high tech production. Four precision nozzles spray up to a million microscopic droplets of ink per second on fine art paper or canvas, creating artwork that is lush, velvet like, and alive with the subtle nuances of the art. The ink is sprayed in a way that actually mixes the colour on the page to create truer shades and hues.

A significant advantage of Giclée printing is that it allows the artists or printer full control of the printing process. Each print is individually made. Adhering to exacting standards means Giclée art is far superior in quality to Lithographs or to other products that are mass-produced from standard offset or desktop printers. Giclée art provides a much broader range of colour, and the colours are brighter, last longer and are of such high resolution that, rather than tiny dots, they are virtually ‘continuous tone.’

Every fine-art product from the SPORT Gallery is printed on premium 100% Hahnemuhle cotton rag paper or Premier Art Canvas, and printed with UltraChrome K3 pigmented inks for the highest available archival quality. Mounting, matting and framing are also to the highest archival standards. We use ArtCare mountboard and matboard. Tru Vue UV-coated conservation glass and Roma solid poplar frames, all of which meet or exceed museum standards for fade resistance and durability.

All limited edition prints from the SPORT Gallery are restricted to a small total edition size. Each piece is hand titled and numbered, carries The SPORT Collection emboss and is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity which sets out the details of the edition as well as bearing a detailed description of the image.

We use the same approach to curating our apparel collection as we do to curating our photography and art collections--selecting items for their uniqueness, historical significance, and style, and then ensuring they are produced to the the highest quality.

We work with brands across North America that have Major League sports licenses to create unique, vintage-inspired apparel--like the kind you'd find flipping through the historic pages of SPORT magazine.

All of our exclusive pieces feature our favourite vintage logos (that tell a story) and the highest quality materials and garment decoration techniques.

Each exclusive style is also made in limited edition runs--so not only can you be sure that that your garment is unique in quality and look, but that you're only one of a hundred or so people to own it.
