January 1947 SPORT Cover (Andy Phillip, University of Illinois)

The January 1947 edition of the SPORT magazine features five-time NBA All-Star Andy Phillip. Named the 1943 National Player of the Year for the University of Illinois, Phillip was drafted into the NBA in the first round of the 1947 draft where he would ultimately win the NBA Championship in 1957 as a member of the Boston Celtics and be named to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1961.

SPORT Magazine, which ran from 1946 to 2000, celebrated what its editors accurately anticipated would be the coming explosion of interest in professional and amateur sport in post-war North America.
